Pork belly

LAMP Feb 26, 2007 05:48 PM

Does anyone know where I might be able to buy pork belly in Manhattan? I have a couple of recipes I want to try but can't seem to find it. Have tried Wholefoods, Trader Joes, Fresh Direct etc etc, any ideas welcome.

    Deluxe Food Market in Chinatown
79 Elizabeth Street at Grand St.

Great place - but not for the faint of heart. . .black chickens, gizzards, feet and offal abound!!! mmmm. . . .

Also the Korean market in K-town on 32nd street usually carried a bunch of different types of pork belly. i.e., whole, sliced, etc.

You will find it at any butcher in chinatown and it is very inexpensive compared to any upmarket place. I like the butcher on Mulberry between Canal and Bayard.

Someone asked for it at Fairway Downtown last Sunday, but the butcher said they had none. I go to Western Beef for pork belly, usually. Although the Japanese stores on Third Avenue (m2m and the Sunrise Market) also have very high quality pork belly, though it is much pricier.

Besides everywhere in Chinatown I also saw it last week at Fairway.

You might want to check out the east side of 9th Ave south of the Port Authority. There are a few Spanish/Cuban (maybe even Italian) buthcer shops that specialize in organ meats, game, unique cuts, etc,. I forget the exact location and names. Somewhere between W.42nd and W.34th. Can someone help me with this?

Almost every supermarket in Chinatown has it.
