Breakfast was the usual everything bagel from Manhattan Bagels on Fourth Street. Crusty and chewy and loaded with seeds and salt, it was packed full of cream cheese, cucumbers, tomatoes, and onions. Left untoasted, because otherwise it would not have been able to contain the ingredients. Great start for the weekend.

Brunch took place at Cock-a-Doodle, on Washington Street in Old Oakland. This new room, next to the Oakland Library Book Store, is attractively set up, with colorful art on the walls, and an inviting patio out back. My multi-grain Belgian waffle came dusted with confectioners sugar; I topped it with fresh blueberries and strawberries. I might have wanted it with a crispier crust, but I think multi-grain flour has its limits. I liked it just fine. My associate's easy-over eggs with chile relleno came in a salsa that was almost a relish, piquant but not excessively hot. The chile and cheese were reported as tasty and with nice texture. After the sticker shock at the last new place I tried, Seasalt, I was pleased that we got out of brunch for $20, including my coffee. The service was friendly and efficient, and the server asked our opinions on everything. Their menu runs from healthy-correcto to hearty, like the omelette with pancetta. Easy parking at 11 AM, even found a broken meter. Heck, I'll be back.

Lunch, well, the good news is that you don't have to make it to El Cerrito on a weekday afternoon to enjoy the bounty of Rick's Quality Meat. At 4 PM I found plenty of the treats already described by Dr. Biggles and rworange. Got me some sweet Italian sausages, and one of those half a smoked chickens. Then the sly butcherman says, "Taste this," and hands me a thin slice of smoked pork loin, just kissed by the microwave. While I savor this treat, he allows as they got enough for a few more sandwiches, and that was lunch, and it's just like rworange said, and I chowed that puppy right then and there. No cheese for me, just a stroke of mayo and some thin-sliced red onion and enough barbecue sauce to dramatize the smoked pork flavor without interfering--that sandwich was all about smoked pork loin.

So I didn't really need dinner, but that didn't prevent tasting the wing and the tail from that half a smoked chicken, along with a couple of very large radishes from the produce department, radish tasty without being too peppery. Can't wait till tomorrow lunch, cause that chicken is waiting for me. Happy Independence Day.

Cock-a-Doodle is on Washington Street in Oakland, between 7th and 8th.
Breakfast, Lunch, and weekend brunch.

Me, too. For the prices, it looks like a good option for weekdays. I did not see the regular weekday menu, only the one for weekend brunch, but I think they're open seven days.

Love it! I have been there plenty of times, and tried everything that is on the menu. Weekend Brunch are the best.

Ceviche Benedicts, and Seafood Burger are among my many favorites. And their coffee and micheladas are Yummy.

I think they are opening for dinner on the special Saturday night movies on Washington in Old Oakland. Wish they open for dinner on a regular basis.

Had brek at Bacheeso's this morning, so I took a closer look at SeaSalt's menu (across the street). Most of the listings look like starters, almost like it's a raw bar; only things that really looked like entrees were fish & chips, and grilled salmon. If you're going, I'd go right now, before they get their booze license, and bring your own, because I'm sure they'll charge corkage once the license is in place.
