So I fulfilled the other half of my New Years Resolution (the first half being to eat at Hatfield's) and ate at Pagolac in Westminster tonight. They're famous for their Bo 7 Mon, seven courses of beef. It's been discussed in great detail before, so there's nothing new here to report-- it's good stuff. At first I thought that I had a little bit more room in me, but in the end, it ended up being just the right amount of food.

I'm very much unskilled in the ways of rolling with the rice paper (or even with lettuce for that matter), so it was a good time had by all as we vainly tried to construct our meal.

My favorite of the 7 courses was the 2nd course: Bo Cha Dum (steamed meatballs). The menu describes it as "delicious meatballs mixed with mushrooms, peanuts and spices steamed to perfection". Hard to argue with that. At first it looked like Meatwad's Vietnamese cousin, I ate it with the crunchy fried rice wafer and lettuce and let the sweet marinade drip down my fingers. Great stuff.

I liked it so much, I have to ask-- where can I get Bo Cha Dum by itself without having to gorge myself on the other six courses?

That was my favorite too. The Bo Cha Dum rocks. Don't know where else they'd serve this. Although I've seen the Bo La Lot being served at those Food-To-Go places on Bolsa.

I like how the shrimp chip plays against the soft crumbly meat ball.

According to the Vietnam House menu, in addition to the 7 courses of beef (for $12.95) you can order the various components separately. Bo Cha Dum (described as "Baked Ground Beef") on its own is $6.75.

Since they're owned by the same folks as Golden Deli, you can get their most excellent Cha Gio, too.

I've had the 7 course beef dinner at Vietnam House and really enjoyed it. It was so much food that I shared it with another person and we were both stuffed. Ok, we also split a grilled pork banh mi for $2.75 but we didn't really have to.

Hi SS,

Any Bo 7 Mon, 7 courses of Beef, place allows you to order any of the 7 courses a la carte if you wish. Sometimes we're in a picky mood and just pick 3 or 4 of the 7 dishes. The a la carte size is bigger than the single serving, and the price reflects that (avg about $7 with the beef/rice soup closer to $4 and the fancier shabu shabu or grilled style closer to $11).

Glad to hear you had a great time! We're not usually impressed with Pagolac anymore (if you come later in the evening, the floor isn't swept, and it's kinda dirty looking), and prefer Hong An 7 courses of beef (at Westminster/Brookhurst, behind the McDonalds, in front of Brodard).

We actually came quite early, and were only the third table filled when we arrived. Business picked up as the evening wore on, but it was far from occupied when we left. The place was tasty but felt kind of lifeless and stark.

I'll have to check out Hong An sometime, as I'm often at Brodard to get my spring roll fix.

How funny... I passed it on my Brookhurst trip this weekend and tried desperately to pry people out of their houses for dinner at Pagolac, but the lure of the Oscars was too strong.
