My current fave is at Gregoire in Berkeley. It comes with a delicious blue cheese pecan spread and they'll do it rare if you ask nice. Hurry up, it's on their June menu so it will be gone come Thursday.

I also like the burger at Cafe Rouge. It's a bit more expensive, but $10 is not bad for a burger and fries at a nice, sit down place. The burger is only on the lunch menu, but they serve it all day.

Both places use premium beef, fresh bread, good veggies, etc.

Joe's Cable Car on Mission st in the Excelsior Dist; the motto is "Joe grinds his own fresh chuck daily", consistently the best burger I've ever had. $$

Bulls Head in West Portal, probably second best, but cheaper than Joe's and they have better fries than Joe's. $

You can't go wrong with the above.

Side note
Zuni burger: Best meat, even better than the above, but worst bread(tasteless focaccia). $$$$

I swear that a home grilled patty from Costco is better than Joe's cable car...and plus it's overpriced!

My favorite is still Bill's on Clement and 23rd. Sure some people might not like it because the toppings on their celebrity burgers kind of overwhelms the meat. But when I take a bite of that Letterman burger with alfalfa sprouts, avocados and burmuda onions, well, I don't even have to chew! Plus when you ask for medium rare, they sure deliver!

Very different from the other suggestions, but I really like Oscar's in Berkeley. Greasy spoon type of place, gruff counter help, but they charcoal grill their burgers fresh and top it as you like (no pickles though). It's just the perfect balance of bread to bun to toppings, cheap, good and filling.

In Marin, for me the best for many years has been Phyllis' Giant Burgers on the "Miracle Mile" in San Rafael. It's a small "joint", but the burgers are great, better than at their newer place in the Village Shopping Center. They'll fix it to your desired state of doneness and will include grilled onions if you ask (no extra charge).

I just had Oola's hamburger and it was amazing - cooked to perfect medium rare and came with great carmelized onions, lettuce, tomato and other options. Great caesar to go with. Certainly rivals Zuni - even to the great vibe in the room (different but equally good energy).

there is a place in Petaluma or Navato, off 101 north in Marin called Mike's. used to be a G.lucas employee hang out, they charge to take off the cheese(nice). it is located in the front of a beef trading yard(slaughter yard). they opened a second place in a mall, don't go there. this original place is awesome and fresh(takes time to get the food). Menu items like the merlot burgers etc. are fun for the contrast in locale. great experience, as yr car kicks up dust pulling into the lot.

second best is Balboa Cafe(g. newsome's) on Filmore, love the blue cheese, great thin fries.

ok, also like the burger at Tadich

24th Street Cafe in Noe Valley has great classic, no frills, burgers. The burgers are cooked to order, always just right, and buns are tasty without getting the way of the Niman Ranch beef. It comes with a salad or fries. Go for the fries; they are hand cut and actually taste like potatoes. All reasonably priced at about $8.95 (I think).
