Rare One Vancouver

Rare One Restaurant on Hornby has a great write-up in Vancouver Magazine 2007. We are booked for a engagement celebration for 4 people. Please advise on their specials etc.... Thank-you

  1. Was there about a month ago and did the tasting menu - it was excellent. I don't know what you mean by "specials"... their menu is seasonal and everything i tried was fantastic. Service was superb as well. You can check out their menu at:

    1. Burrowing Owl Pinot Noir with the Quail.

      1. Just a quick question, out of curiosity...
I noticed the other day that Rare is now "Rare Two" instead of "Rare One". Does anyone know when this change happened, and if there's any significance to it?

I noticed that. I'm having dinner there tonight, So I'll make sure to ask. (I recall seeing some talk over at UDF).

I reliable insider source just told me that they changed it from "One" to "Two" because they are entering their second year of existence. I suppose it will be called Rare "Three" next year.

I will still ask my server tonight when I'm there to confirm.

My wife and I had a stunning dinner at Rare (Two) last night. We ate the March Tasting Menu with the 'better' wine pairings -- augmented with a few cocktails and two rounds of oysters 'done two ways'. The service, as usual, was impeccable. (I may post pics on Monday when I can download the images from my celphone).

So here is some more context on the "One" to "Two" name change. The room on Hornby that Rare occupies is known as the "Suicide Room" - a location that has killed a few other restaurants in the past (the last one was the highly-rated, but ill-fated Bis Moreno).

To celebrate their survival at this difficult location year after year, the management and staff at Rare decided to "change" their name and evolve the concept yearly. Expect a more significant change in concept for Rare Three.

Ah, that's interesting... thanks for asking!

            2. I maned to figure out Bluetooth transfers between my Blackberry and Macbook. So I have some pics to share.

              1. More...

(hmm..screwed up on posting the photos - I can't seem to edit this properly on this board. I'll just add another posting...)
