Chinese New Year in LV
We rang in the Year of the Golden Pig at Chang's Hong Kong Cuisine at 4670 S. Decatur, which is a stand alone restaurant about 3 miles from the strip. I had chosen one of the set menus, originally priced at $438 but with some substitutions, it came out to $388 per table of 10. We had 35 people squeezed onto 3 tables. They have a smaller side dining area that holds up to 4 banquet tables, so we had a semi private space. Service was good natured and efficient. We brought champagne and wine (the restaurant provided wine glasses) and they didn't charge me for corkage. It was also a birthday celebration and we brought 2 cakes ordered from Layers Bakery in Henderson (more about that later). I had forgotten to get candles, but the kitchen provided them for me. The group consisted of our extended family, from elders down to grandchildren, the youngest was 2 years old.
-Cold platter of roast pork, jellyfish, soysauce chicken, deboned chicken feet, pressed pork and five spice beef slices.
-Seafood and tofu soup
-Peking duck - in 2 stages, first buns stuffed with skin, second platter was the rest of the duck.
-Seafood and vegetables in fried noodle basket
-Stir fried you tsai (a pure green vegetable, kind of looks like Chinese broccoli but much tastier in my estimation)
-2 Crabs stir fried with nian gao (rice sticks)
-Sirloin cubes stir fried with XO sauce
-Steamed whole rock cod
-Yangchou fried rice
-E fu Noodles
The portions were sizeable, and we had lots of leftovers that none of us could take back as we were all from out of town. For me, the highlights were the crab, the beef and the rock cod. Everything was very good, but the crab in particular was outstanding and plentiful.
For dessert we had red bean and lotus seed soup and birthday cakes.
The birthday cakes were 8 inch rounds, one a Raspberry Blonde, three layers of yellow cake with raspberry filling and the other the Golden Fortune cake, with chocolate chips in the batter and a caramel topping. Hidden inside is a chocolate truffle, whoever finds it will have special good fortune.
Chang's serves dim sum during the day and on weekends is quite crowded. It is well known among the Chinese community. Highly recommended. There is a sister restaurant at the Texas Station and formerly at Bally's.
This is a standard menu (available in English too), priced at $438, but I swapped out lobster for crab and nixed the sharks fin soup and sea cucumbers, so the price went down. There are other New Year dishes that we could have added. Most special dishes have names that symbolize "luck" or "good fortune" or "longevity" and are not based on the animal year. I could have added Peking spareribs, but there was already too much food.....
