Surprise 35th birthday - drinks and apps

I am looking for bars in DC to have a 35th surprise birthday get together. I'd like a place with reasonable drink prices, especially for beers, since this will be a beer (Bud/Miller) drinking crowd. I don't want to have it at a dive-y bar, but I also don't want someplace super swanky with a see and be seen crowd. Someone suggested Local 16. It will be on a Saturday night in late March. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

  1. Local 16 is a meat marketon the weekends and is generally super crowded. If you go earlier it may be good. If the weather is nice it will be even more crowded because of their roof deck.

    1. I've used the Reef for this kind of thing before, though I go there all the time, Bourbon works for this and has great finger foods- this all depends on how late in the evening you are going to go though- I know you can reserve space at a variety of bars, but you're going to have to pay to do that. Also, how many folks are you looking at having?

      1. I'm thinking it will be around 20-30 people and we'll probably get together around 8:30-9pm. I considered Bourbon, but thought the space downstairs may be too small since it tends to fill up there on weekend nights, but maybe I'm wrong.

If you want to use the Bourbon in Adams Morgan, you can use their upstairs bar called "The Blue Room" and for a fee they will reserve the loft for you which holds about 30 people. I'm going to be using it in June for an event, thus I'm sure they will do it for you in March. The blue room not only has your macrobrew junk, but also has an extremely nice bottle selection of good beer.

You can also rent out the lower bar at The Reef (commonly known as Lush) though I'm going to guess that is going to be fairly expensive for a saturday evening.

        2. How about the Childe Harold in Dupont? I think for free you can reserve the upstairs room as well.
