Recs for Summit Co., Vail, Aspen, Keystone?
I'll be taking the annual ski vacation in early March this year and, while we have a house and usually cook, I wanted to do more eating out this year. We have really only eaten at the Dillon Dam Brewery as far as restaurants (off-mountain) are concerned, so any recs are welcome. Thanks.

You are right, Zacca Za is in the same building as Swiss Hotdog. Its the building with the grass roof (which is really seedem, whatever that is). Just heard that the owner of Frites and the Gore Range Brewery is opening a "high-end" place on the east end of Riverwalk in Edwards. Hope he finds a way to improve the quality of his offerings. With Juniper and Dish putting out good food in Edwards, he is going to have to do something special to compete.

So, I completely forgot to come back here to post a review. My friend and I had reservations for 7pm on a Thursday evening. We arrived and it was fairly empty but it is Vail Valley on a Thursday before most spring breaks. We were seated and our server asked for drink orders. He seemed a little miffed when my friend didn't order anything other than water (she doesn't drink) and from then on out the service was sub-par. I understand that servers bank on their tips as I have waited tables as have many friends and family and I have family that owns restaurants. However, I generally tip somewhere between 20-25% if service is average to good.
I ordered the pan roasted mussels and a side of green beans while my friend ordered the seared tuna salad and something else that I can't remember. When the food arrived I felt the mussels were a reasonable serving but I was served what was basically a platter of green beans. I can't imagine that it would have taken less than 4 people to finish all that was served which was just a waste of food and money. Overall, the food and atmosphere was good but the service and presentation left some room for improvement.

re: RobynS
RobynS, is this Frites or someplace else in the Vail Valley? If it Frites, no surprise. If its not, please give us a warning. By the way, I'm starting to hear good things about the food at Zacca Za, but the service and attitude is still not good. I hope they get it fixed by summer, they are going to have the best patio and boche court in Colorado.

I used to live in Breck. The post that was linked to is pretty accurate. South Ridge Seafood Grill is wonderful, I do miss it. Cafe Alpine was always run by people who are serious about good food and would be my first choice if I went back. I did like the Butterhorn Bakery in Frisco and the Blue Moose for breakfast in Breck. Dot's Donuts or something like that was also good in Breck.
Steak and Rib used to be good for steak, very basic but good stuff. Have fun!

Had dinner at Dish last night. The only thing that compares with the food there is the caring staff. Once you figure out that its lot of small plates to be shared, the place is killer. I like the way its laid out, bar on the left for the locals to hang out and dinning by the windows. The sweetbreads were outstanding, as was the mussels (best I've had in the Valley) and the greens. Now the one knock, the wine mark up is ridiculous. I'd guess about 4 times wine store price. So nurse one wine by the glass or 1/4 caraffe or red and one of white. Also, I don't like paying $5 for bread.

tenmiler put a comprehensive review list together on this board earlier. Here's the link:

Also, if you want a personal chef to come in and cook a great curried meal for you, call Bill Dowd in Silverthorne - 970.262.5863. -
Will do a review later when I have time, but La Bottega in Vail is incredible - so much better than Campo or Ti Amo - we ended up having at least one meal there per day. Great atmosphere, staff, get resvs or sit at the pizza bar, which is a whole lot of fun & very entertaining watching pretty accomplished chefs do their thing in that 625 degree pizza oven.

Several earlier threads included lots of info on Breck in particular, Summit County in general, Vail and Aspen. After an Aspen/Buttermilk day, I would add perhaps stopping on the way back for dinner in Carbondale. Six89 and Phat Thai, both on Main Street and both owned by chef Mark Fisher, are excellent. Basalt, farther upvalley, also has some interesting restaurants. The only one I've been to recently was Bistro Basalt -- good soups, good salads, good beef but truly lousy pizza.
