Great Hungarian/Eastern-European Food at DJ's Bistro in Concord

Don't even ask me how I stumbled unto this place. Okay, if you insist. My brother spent a year abroad in Budapest and ever since has been on the hunt for good Hungarian goulash, to no avail. Then upon searching google, he found some hockey website where, in Hungarian, Hungarians in the SF Bay Area were talking about DJ's Bistro, a small place in a strip-mallish place in Concord. Random. But he went, and he has been raving about the spetzle ever since. We went on Saturday night, and it was solid. Great goulash with spetzle, tons of Eastern Europeans drinking Spaten/Pilsner beer on tap raucously watching some sports, great apple strudel. Found this one review, which has links to a map.

I'm surprised Not to see me post here previously, see link for other reviews. This is one of the very few places in the area to get good food in the German - Czech - Hungarian spectrum. Really need to visit more often.

One of my favorite places to eat Hungarian food. The fried cheese is amazing and so it the Wienershnitzel. They have really good soups too that come with the main entrees for dinner. The beers are excellent too. My fav is the Krusovice on tap. If you like European food this is the place to go.

It doesn't matter what you order. It's all great. The people make you feel like you're sitting at their kitchen table. Family, food and lots of beer.

I'm glad to see DJ's is still serving up quality Eastern European cuisine (Czech/German?). I remember trying it out many years ago and loving the pork roast and spaetzle then. Good beer and friendly service too. I'm really glad to hear it's food is still good.

I haven't had much luck with Hungarian places. Schroeder's downtown I go to for beer and not much else - the food is oversalted and oily. I end up at Russian or German. On the German front, Walzwerk is a favorite. http://sanfrancisco.citysearch.com/pr...
they have mouth-watering potato pancakes. A friend of mine who is a vegeterian had the cheese spatzle and it was like German mac&cheese, very good.
One tip for the East Bay -- the restaurant is only a few miles from the freeway, so you could go to a movie before or after in Walnut Creek to give yourself a reason to go out there. You have any favorites?

Thanks for the report. This place has been high on my list to try when I'm in that area ever since I read Jonathan Kauffman's review. What else have you tried?
