Driving trip - Ann Arbor to Toledo - Ethnic Food?

Are there any good ethnic places to eat on this route? Mexican, Asian? I know there's supposed to be good Middle-Eastern but what about Asian or Mexican food? Looking for more "mom & pop" authentic places. Please help!

  1. I don't know anyplace in between. Both have good spots. In Toledo it depends on how far off US 23 you want to venture. There is The Beirut for world class Lebanese; Loma Linda, a Toledo tradition for Tex-Mex - exit Airport Highway and go several miles west; there is a very nice Indian resto on Airport Hwy just west of the freeway exit called Indian Jewel of Toledo; the best Japanese is probably Koto Buki on Monroe Street

    1. agree with those toledo classics. of course there is also TONY PACKOS hungarian too.

if you want to explore on your own, i may have a lead for you: since i lived there in the 80's there has been an increase in hispanic presence in south toledo, a nabe now has the moniker "la vista." that may point you toward something chowish.

La Vista has fallen a long way since then...trust me. Stay away from it. It's now a hang-out spot for gang-bangers in one of Toledo's worst neighborhoods. The owner is FAR from deserving of your business and your spending dollars!

      2. Good small-plates place with an Arabic flavor called (natch) Poco Piatti in Toledo, around the 5000 block of Monroe, in a plaza on the southern (southwestern) side of the road.

        1. Wow, Loma Linda, haven't heard that name in at least 20 years. There is a Mexican community near Adrian, but no idea about eateries. Best Mex on the north end belongs to the two sisters. There is La Fiesta Mexicana on Cross St. in Ypsilanti, and on Packard just east of Carpenter not far from there is her sister's Taqueria, whose name escapes me.

Both are authentic Mexican, and outstanding. If you go Taqueria, you have to try the chicharron. There are other ethnic places I know of around Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti if you're interested, some of which have been mentioned previously in other threads, including plenty of Asian, or post back if you want to hear about them.

But what's between AA and Toledo is mostly Midwest America.

          1. Is the Danube Inn in Milan still open? It is a Hungarian tavern and I had a good lunch there about 15 years ago....

It's closed ... was sorry to see it go. The building was for sale last I looked. Would be a nice place for someone to open up a Casey's-type bar with sharp food, esp. with the Toyota facility going in a few miles north. For a decent takeout greasebucket burger there is Roy's on Wabash St. in Milan., with a pleasant park right next to it. But I've never had much luck along this road.

            2. Please disregard that advice about Club La Vista. The new owner, Hector Cordero, is a !@#$%$^&*( on his BEST day! I saw him get in a customer's face just for asking a question. This place is now a dump for gang-bangers to hang out in. Stay away from there...seriously! Your money would be better spent as toilet paper.

              1. For Indian, I like the Tandoor in Toledo. It's on Reynolds Road, about half a mile north of the Turnpike entrance.

Just want to thank you in this thread for the Tandoor rec. We drove exactly this, Ann Arbor to Toledo (well, on the way back to Pittsburgh), on Friday afternoon and got into Toledo between 5-5:30, just in time to have dinner here. I had noted it on the off chance we were passing through at the right time, and it was perfect! Good food and as a bonus quite inexpensive.
