Poleng Lounge
Partner and I went a few nights ago and had a mixed experience. Tune Poke was a nice way to start, though a little too spicy for me. Eggplant tower was laughably small, and the Roti Prata that came with it was a far cry from the Straits Cafe version. Vegetarian dumplings were delicious, but the biggest disappointment was the shrimp curry. It was incredibly rich, with way too much cream, and was also underspiced.
Finally, we're used to seeing top notch restaurants stick to seasonal produce, and it was strange to see cherry tomatoes, eggplant, and other similar items on the menu.
The food was carefully prepared, even if it missed a bit at times, and the service was good. I'm inclined to give it another chance, but can't understand why the Chron raved.

Wow, I guess everyone is different :-)
I love Poleng Lounge and the eggplant tower is one of my favorite dishes. I love the ambiance and have always had good service. And the Monkey Love is one of the best cocktails in the city.
Oh well, to each their own.
Although I do agree on the seasonal produce (I get a CSA box myself), it's more of the exception than the rule I find for many places in SF. It's in season somewhere else (south america), just not sourced locally, seasonally.›1 Reply -
