Where are we going to eat on Saturday
My girlfriend and I are going to be up from DC on Saturday - Monday. Saturday night we are going to do dinner around 10 PM- you know, earlybirds. Anyways- We have a reservation at 11 Madison Park and love that style of upscale cuisine, and I doubt we are going to get in to Per Se, but how about some other ideas? Budget isn't an issue and we are staying at the W Lexington. Thanks in advance!

Why don't you want to go to Eleven Madison Park? It's just about the hottest table in town right now.... I'd not worry about another choice. and frankly, I'd rather go there or Gramercy Tavern than Per Se. but I'm NOT into pretensions with my dinner.

Have you been to Eleven Madison since Chef Humm arrived early in '06? If not, you are in for a real treat. But even if you have already tasted his sensational cuisine, you may not have had the current menu. A few months ago, he added his signature duck for two to the prix-fixes. Seriously delicious! And if you're looking for a tasting menu, the Gourmand is transcendent.
ChefJune mentioned Gramercy Tavern. The big difference there is that Michael Anthony, formerly of Blue Hill, took over the kitchen in October. So, even if you've been there before, there is a huge difference in the cuisine. Chef Anthony has completely overhauled the menus. If you can't get a table in the dining room, consider the Tavern Room. We ate in the latter and really enjoyed the food. I say this as someone who has not been a fan of GT. But, now, I think things are looking way up.
I highly recommend that you include Urena, on 28th St., b/t Madison & Park Av. S., where Alex Urena is serving superb Spanish-influenced cuisine. Happily, the restaurant just marked its first anniversary. There are some who weren't sure it could get past a somewhat rocky start, essentially because of negative reactions to the space and, in particular, the garish lighting. However, while the space is a bit awkward -- and located on a very non-descript block -- the decor is quite pleasant and they have corrected the light (by simply painting the ceiling) so that it is now just right. You should have no difficulty securing a table. (Note: Closed Sunday.)
Veritas has been a long-time favorite. Chef Scott Bryan's excellent New American cuisine isn't overly complicated, but it is full of flavor and very satisfying. And, of course, the wine list is one of the most extraordinay in the city. The ambiance is the antithesis of EMP, i.e., small dining space with soothing, stylish minimalist decor.
Enjoy your visit to NYC and Bon Appetit!
