ISO- 'Mom & Pop' type Italian in S.G.V. area

  • 7

We'd like to take my mom out for her birthday tomorrow (2-19) and she's requested Italian, but would rather support a 'little guy's' restaurant rather than the 'corporate chains'. Any good Mom & Pop type place you could recommend? We live in San Gabriel, but are willing to travel a bit. Thanks for your help!

    1. Petrillo's Pizza
      (626) 280-7332
      833 E Valley Blvd
      San Gabriel, CA 91776

      1. Angelos in Alhambra.
On Valley about 4-5 blocks east of Atlantic.

        1. how about: LA FORNARETTA: 2 1/2 stars, 39 S. Raymond St., Old Pasadena, (626) 585-9088. I haven't been there but I want to since it's run by Sicilian immigrant couple and gets good reviews for its authenticity.

          1. There's Scarantino's on Colorado in Pasadena - a couple of blocks west of Sierra Madre, east of Allen, on the north side of the street (where Dino's used to be). Not outstanding, but solidly good, YMMV.

There's also a restaurant on Rosemeade, just south of Huntington, on the east side of the street (just south of the Trader Joe's shopping center). We've only gotten take-out there, but it's been good.

A little more upscale is Nikki C's (http://www.sangabrielvalleymenus.com/...) - it's on Rosemeade, between Del Mar and California, on the east side of the street. Good food and service, nice ambiance.

            Some other options here:

            1. Thanks! I think we'll start with Petrillo's and work our way through your suggestions in the next several months! They sound loike exploring1

              1. This is what I thought of Petrillo's...(posted it under diff. topic)

"The only thing worth eating at Petrillo's is the pizza. I've ordered the lasagna, fettuccine, and spaghetti there...it was all drowned in sauce. So as my bf ate his yummy pizza, I was disappointed by my selection =("

So unless you like mounds of sauce you should try some other place...IMHO.
