Good Mexican or Japanese near La Cienega and Melrose?

vickib Feb 16, 2007 01:24 PM

I'm going out to that part of town tomorrow evening (feb 17), and need an inexpensive place with good food. I know Mexican is the better bet for inexpensive, but you never know! I would also like general suggestions for anything tasty and interesting around there.

You could always get tacos from El Carmen (on Third Street, near the Little Door, a little east of La Cienega). El Carmen is mainly a bar with a trendy crowd and a large tequila list, but they have a limited menu that I've found to be quite tasty. Soft tacos, rice, beans, chips and guacamole.

Otherwise, I'd second the recommendations for Yabu or Mishima.

lala's on melrose and la brea is great and cheap. haven't been in a while - but used to be a great bet. oh - it's argentinian (sp?) - good chicken, salads. . .

there's also a mexican place called antonios - that's a little west of there that is pretty good. but it actually might be more expensive than lala's.

Yabu is right there, on La Cienega just north of Melrose. it's the kind of place where you can spend a little or spend a lot. Mishima is definitely inexpensive and generally good.

Not much Mexican around there actually, at least in the lower price ranges. I would recommend Newsroom Cafe on Robertson (not Mexican or Japanese, just American) or Mishima on La Cienega and Third for Japanese.
