I would avoid Mangia e Bevi. In addition to the food being mediocre, this place is very popular for baby and wedding showers, so you run a very high risk of being subjected to one or more of these quite raucous groups.

Indian: Bengal Express (9th and 53rd) - decor not that special but the food is inexpensive and good.

Chinese: Grand Sichuan (9th and 50th)

Mexican: Tulcingo Del Valle (10th and 47th)

      Italian: Maria Pia (51st, b/t 8th and 9th)

Thai: Wondee Siam (9th and 53rd)

Grand Sichuan is really good - and appropriate for kids. Ralph's is an old-school red sauce place. It's probably fine for kids, but the food: huge portions of bland overcooked pasta - not very good.
Mangia and Bevi is a mob scene - big with single 20 something girls from NJ. Wondee Siam is great.
You might also try Turkish Cuisine in the mid 40's. Roborto Passon is probably the best Italian in that hood but you really need a reservation before 8:30 or 9. Locando DaVini is a good second choice for Italian.

I don't think that Roborto Passon or Locando DaVini can considered inexpensive.

            I second Ariana.

For Mexican, I like El Centro.
