I was planning on taking some people to Lucky Three for dim sum this weekend and totally forgot that it is the Chinese New Year. Does anyone know if there will be something special going on or do places close?

Chinese restaurants never ever close except for Thanksgiving. Anything special would be a dinner event via an X course meal, not for dim sum. In fact, if you're doing dim sum, I'd suggest you get there extra extra early. Although, some larger joints may have a lion dance to help break in the new year. More likely a larger joint like New Fortune or Lucky 3 rather than a small joint like Mark's Duck House. For sure in Chinatown, when they have the New Year's parade, all chinese restaurants will be inviting the lion into the restaurant for luck.

Hmmm, I can't help but wonder, will crowds make the food better (more turnover, fresher stuff) or worse (people taking my favorite things, carts never getting to us)? I think we will try to get there as soon as they open on Sunday to avoid crowds.

Crowds will definitely result in more turnover, but the wait will definitely be longer. One way to get around that is to take your table check and go to the cart to get the food yourself instead of waiting for the cart to come around. This though, makes you look a bit desperate.

The drawback with getting there too early is that you may be done well before the lion dance starts, so you could be "hogging" a table and might be given the check to encourage you to leave. Ideal time to get there is probably 12:15 - 12:30, but there will definitely be a line by then. Try to get a table by the kitchen.

I went to Lucky Three during a new year's celebration a year or two back. They did have some festivities going on -- a dragon and some other performers. The food was tasty.
