Valentine's eve at Evoo
Evoo was surprisingly busy given the nasty weather. I wish they had their Valentine’s Day menu on their web site so I could precisely recall some of the lovely details…
I started with a terrific rose petal martini. It was very interesting. They make it with house-made rose petal infused vodka that was slightly sweet with a hint of vanilla. We did a three course prix fix and ordered a bottle of Ridge Zinfandel.
We started with the porcini mushroom flan and the baked apple with roasted duck and seared foie gras. They were both very good. The flan is on the regular menu but I had never tried it and it was just awesome. Big mushroom flavor, a little salty, and surprisingly light. It was quite good. I was thrilled that I ordered the apple. It was great, one of the best winter apps I have ever had. Apple was lightly and pleasantly spiced so it could compete with the foie gras and duck, which were rich and delicious. I wanted to lick the plate…
Moved on to the bibb lettuce salad (on the regular menu) and roasted parsnip soup. I really enjoyed the salad. The buttermilk black pepper dressing had a nice bit. It was served shaved red onion, fontina cheese, and walnuts. Good and simple. The roasted parsnip soup was very light and fresh. I didn’t try too much because it was a very small serving; too small IMO, but BF really enjoyed it.
I had the sirloin entrée with braised oxtails, roasted potatoes, and broccoli. BF had the seared Carolina striped bass with red curry risotto, tempura fried bacon, and cabbage salad. Sadly, the entrees were the low point of the dinner. The bass was probably a poor choice as neither of us like really strong fishy fish. It was very fishy and the cabbage salad didn’t really seem to work with it. Curry risotto was really different. I like it a lot. The sirloin entrée would have been stellar if it were more tender. The server advised that it was being server medium to medium rare. It was definitely medium rather than medium rare which isn’t my preference. The oxtails were very good but the broccoli and potatoes were rather plain and uninteresting.
I’ve had better meals at Evoo but all in all, for a hyped up restaurant night, it was quite good. I can’t wait to have the flan again!
