Best Mexican in Richmond, VA?

I want to go out for Mexican tonight, but every place I know of or have been to in the area seem sub par. Good, really good, mexican food is hard to find. Any recs for the Richmond area? (That also might not be way busy tonight).

  1. I have yet to find good authentic Mexican in the 9+ years I've been here. Of course being a California native I'm pretty hard to please. I've heard there are a couple of good places on the southside on Jeff Davis Hwy and Hull Street (El Hulpa?). Someone also told me there's a pretty good place in Powhatan called El Corazon Azul or something like that.

The place out in Powhatan is El Cerro Azul...pretty good. It is the same owner/management as Hot Tamale (off Hull St) and both are fairly good.

I live in Powhatan and haven't been there (I like Hot Tamale, I work near Brandermill), but am anxious to try it. Thanks for the recommendation.

    2. I have not tried the place in Powhatan yet. True, great Mexican food is hard to find here. There is a place across the street from the state police building on Midlothian that is the best I have found (it's name escapes me right now but it's in an old Dunkin Donuts building) by far.

Janet, where on Midlothian is that? Is that east of Chippenham Parkway near the Channel 12 complex?

It's just west of Chippenham past Cloverleaf Mall & Arbys (on the same side of the road as the mall).

      2. The place on Midlothian is la Palmera, it is in an Old Dunkin Donuts just west of Chippenham, on the same side of the street as the old mall...it is delicious. I have not stopped at any of the places on Jeff Davis Hwy but was driving it a few months ago on the way to Route 10 and it looks like a Hispanic community has really grown up around there in all the little old motels, they were a ton of tiendas and taquerias where you might find some more authentic foods.

        1. There is a restaurant/grocery on Hull Street called La Milpa that I have heard good things about. We always go to Mi Hacienda, Mexico, or Don Jose, in that order of preference.
