  1. I've only seen the Donut Man featured on Huel Houser... From what I understood on the feature, the strawberry-filled donuts were offered during the strawberry harvest which is approximately late April through about June or July. However, this has obviously changed. I talked with David Karp - known as the Fruit Detective - about strawberries about 1 1/2 years ago. He told me about some new varieties of strawberries coming down the pipe that would actually produce fruit in the cooler monthes, which means fresh strawberries would be available almost year round. His one caviat was that he just could not understand how these strawberry plants could produce fruit that was of the size, sweetness, and quality of a "normal" plant that required warmer weather. He felt it defied the laws of nature. About the only thing he could think of that performed year round were European soccer players! OK, he didn't say that, but it is strange... strawberries in February? What next - Christmas in June? Is nothing sacred anymore?

You gotta try them and let us know how they were! I've often awaken early on a Saturday morning and toyed with the thought of driving all the way out to Glendora for a shot at those gems. Thanks.

    1. The strawberries at the Hollywood farmer's market right now are good. Not as amazing as in the summer, but still pretty great. So I imagine that would be good in a donut. I guess I don't really care if they are some genetic mutant freak strawberry, it tastes darn good.

Donut Man does make a mean donut.

I hear you... The Fruit Detective is truly a purist. David Karp knows more about any single fruit than most folks' comprehensive knowledge about fruit. But I agree with you about the winter strawberries at the farmer's market in Hollywood. We picked up a 3pak just after the big freeze last month - man that sounds wierd - almost like a snowball in hell. I was very impressed with the overall quality and can see those in the masterful hands of the Donut Man. Hypothetically, if a Westsider were to go on a Saturday morning, when would I have to be at Donut Man's counter by to assure a shot at these beauties?

it's a tough call - i was there in the late evening when they had them displayed - i suggest you give them a call ( not sure if they'll answer )

Agreed... and in general the guys working there work at the nearby colleges, so they are pretty nice... And they know the drill about "THE" donut. :)

KJS and Dommy - thanks... been wanting to try the donuts filled with strawbs and peaches too. I thought I'd have to wait until late spring, but looks like I may have to make a run... Dommy - you must constantly be on a treadmill - your are the ultimate gourmet/gourmand(in the good sense)!

As for the tredmill thing, lets just say that the Nike+ system was one of the best gifts I've ever recieve this Christmas! :) The other, was my chowmobile:

      2. i must try this! for years my friends have talked up the donut man.
but being in santa monica, TDM is so very very far from me...

        1. Good gravy! I wish I had read this last night. But tonight I go to Donut Man!

Btw, most CA strawberries are now year-round. The fall plantings are harvested from December - June and March - October (different area).

          1. Harry's Berries at the Farmer's Market are the best!!!
