Idaho Dining [Split from Pacific Northwest thread]

2 places that I miss in the Boise area, Epi's in Meridian and The Stagecoach in Garden City

Epi's is a Basque restaurant that was opened by the Ansotegui sisters. They serve a family style meal with a wide variety and great fresh sheet choices. Go out of your comfort zone and order the exotic, you won't be disappointed. By the end of the meal, you will feel like one of Kris' family members. By the way, if you are in Boise, visit the historic Basque block and partake a frosty beverage at Gernika, Dan Ansotegui's place. They have some great tapas and one of the best burgers in the valley. Saturday he serves a beef tongue not to be missed.

The Stagecoach is a kitschy throwback type of place. One side of the establishment is the bar, the other the restaurant. It's dark, there are no windows. I have made the mistake of not bringing a watch, i ended up closing the place. For lunch during the week, they have a cafeteria style walk through with a dailiy special. If memory serves, Tuesday is meatloaf, Friday is halibut chucks. Simple comfort food. Their bar prawns are a can't miss. Oh, their steaks are top notch as well. The "Coach" is not Ruth's Chris, nor is it Sizzler. It has one of the most unique identities in the valley.

  1. It appears the Boise area may be outgrowing the supply of good restaurants. Last Wednesday on our way in from California fighting the traffic at about 5:45 p.m., we tried to eat at Epi's. No Dice, full for several hours. Driving the surface streets to the Stagecoach at about 6:30 we found the parking lot so full of cars that I didn't think it possible to fit that many people into a building that size. Onward to Gernika, we found the whole downtown area crowded with people and little parking, especially since we we pulling a snowmobile trailer. Giving up, we ate at what is probably a local chain. On the way home Saturday, we got into the Stagecoach at about 3:00 p.m. for an early meal. We discovered there had been no mention of another house-specialty, banana cream pie with fresh whipped cream.
