Le Petite Marche

I'm having dinner tonight at Le Petite Marche, the new French bistro in Brooklyn Heights. What should I order?

Just ate here last week. We were seated right in the front window on the warmest evening of the year. It was lovely (until a back hoe showed up and started tearing up the street). Our salads were simple and fresh. I had the wedge with roquefort. My wife's mussels were tasty but the fries were fantastic. My skate was very good as well. Service was very friendly, though they cleared plates very quickly. Just a quirk, I think. All in all, a nice addition to the neighborhood.

I had dinner here last night and finally ordered the burger (Fleur has raved about it so much I had to try it) and WOW! Definitely the best burger I've had in a long time. Cooked perfectly, topped with gruyere, pancetta and onions and served with perfect fries and delicious horseradish ketchup. I had an artichoke special (stuffed with fontina and breadcrumbs and served in a lemon broth) and my companions had the salmon and chicken fricasee. It was my 4th or 5th visit and I'll definitely go back soon.

We've been there several times as well and like the place. The prices are high enough that its not an easy decision to eat there vs. so many other places in the same range, but we'll be back often enough (convenience and comfort sometimes wins out). Last week, while the rest of our party of 4 were eating very solid upscale well-prepared entrees, I had the burger. For $12, this is a steal. Every bit as good as anyplace else, including Waterfront Ale House. Of course, they all stopped laughing about my order when they saw it. Life is good.

And the fries surpass those at Waterfront Ale House by far! Seriously, this is my new destination whenever I'm craving a burger. Well, until I try that 5 Guys place that's set to open on Montague. But I just can't say it enough, Le Petit Marche is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood.

just watch out for the sneaky overpriced specials. We had an heirloom tomato salad and a grilled squid over beans appetizers. Both specials, priced at $13 / $14 respectively, which I thought was a little cheeky, given that most of their apps. are in the $7-$8 zone.

I would like to add that the room is warm and comfortable. The service is professional, and the welcome from the owner is a plus.

There was just a little wait for our table. We lingered over our cafe and cognac, and never felt rushed.

A wonderful . very French experience, very close to home.

We love the place, and will be back again very soon.

          Lucky you!

We had a wonderful dinner at LE PETIT MARCHE over the weekend. Everything we have ever had there has been wonderful.

We started out with The Salade du Marche and Warm Wild mushroom Salad. The first was fresh, vibrant and refreshing, the Mushroom Salad was rich and flavorful, sauteed and served in a red wine reduction.

The Cassoulet was outstanding, as good as any I have had in the Soutwest of France. The Confit was meltingly luscious and rich, the pork tender and flavorful, the sausage comme il faut, and the Ragout of White Beans cooked to perfection.

The Steak Frites was excellent typical Bistro fare, cooked perfectly, garnished with a knob of Roquefort butter, and served with freshly made crispy Frites,

For Dessert we both had the Tarte Tatin. It was a well made crispy pastry on the bottom ( flipped from cooking on top, firm yet fully cooked chunks of Apple, deeply and richly caramelized. It is served with a homemade Cinnamon Ice Cream.

Excellent value at under $50 per person.

On a previous visit we had Salades and the outrageously wonderful Burgers, which is served on a freshly baked Pain Brioche - like bun, with Greens and Frites.

Easily the best Burger on the Heights as of now.
