Vietnamese Cinnamon at Cheese Boutique

Periodically there's someone looking for this in Toronto -- just picked up some organic Saigon Cinnamon at the Cheese Boutique today (Feb 11 2007)

    I am a little unclear on why folks would think I might not have gotten what I said I got.

      I certainly didn't mean to imply that you got something other than Viet cinnamon.

      I just posted those links to make it clear that what you got wasn't cassia, as some of the other posters guessed.

        no worries, I didn't take your post that way at all. Your post did prompt me to go find the can and post the brand's site though so that people could compare your links to the source.

      For clarity's sake, true (Ceylon) cinnamon, cassia, and Vietnamese cinnamon are three distinct spices, and the latter is especially well regarded by some.

        If you're comfy with CB, swell. I get mine from H&H Supermarket in Mississauga--a large Chinese market with a decided SE Asian accent. I've seen it in several places along Spadina. Take it with you and ask. Kensington? Not sure whether you didn't get ground cassia.

          It may be Cassia, a cinnamon relative that is used interchangeably with cinnamon in a lot of processed foods. Unground, it is a thicker bark -- won't look like those thin fluted quills of cinnamon. I do find that it is a slightly spicier, savoury tasting version of cinnamon.

            CB is the last place on the planet I'd buy this sort of spice.Try the SE Asian grocers up and down Spadina--better selection, fresher, far cheaper.

              Have you actually seen Viet Cinnamon at a specific Spadina merchant? I haven't ever found it so if you've got a source, please spill.

            Is it in stick form or ground? How does it differ from "regular" cinnamon?

              the stuff I got is ground. it's darker, slightly more coarsely ground, got a more black pepper like bite with a bit more nutmegginess. not a clue what the organicness of it does, they didn't have a non-organic option.
