Three Black Grain Powder or other coffee sub

So I was in Chinatown yesterday trying to find a substitute for coffee that would be creamy but not filled with sugar (no caffeine either), when I picked up Sweet Garden Three Black Grain Powder, which looked like it would hit the spot, in a Postum kind of way. When I tried it though it was kind of awful, the texture can only be described as wet ashes -- am I doing something wrong? Or does anyone have a good caffeine/sugar free substitue they can reccomend? I've been using this great orzo-coffee-cocoa Italian thing from Arthur Ave, but now I need to cut back on even that.

I love Cafix....with a bit of milk it's just like bad truckstop coffee...but in a good way ya know?
