Gus' Place For Lunch
Celebrated a double-birthday at Gus' Place on Bleecker, between McDougal and 6th Avenue, the other Saturday. All agreed that it was a winner. Started with mezedes for the table, all good, stuffed grape leaves, sausages, peppers, even the pickled tomato, very nice in the dead of winter. The tzatziki was excellent, even the nephew who passed initially started scarfing it down after hearing our raves (tho' one person thought too much garlic - just right said the rest of us i.e. lots!) The tiny fried fish plate disappeared in no time at all, very nicely fried, not at all oily. Sis had the pressed lamb sandwich with french fries, and I've been dreaming of it since. She thought the fries were the best she'd ever eaten - nobody disagreed - and the sandwich itself was superb. The pasta special was excellent, but some of the menu's other mains were the only (slightly) down note - salmon in phyllo was a bit dry, Greek salad OK, shrimp in orzo too bland for my taste, tho' the ladies liked it just fine. Desserts: creme brulee just average, but the flourless chocolate cake and the semolina cake had us battling for crumbs and risking puncture wounds from flying forks, both excellent. The waitress recommended a nice Greek white, name now forgotten, but we liked it two bottles worth. As we sat back, sated after all of that, Gus brought over muscat shooters on the house, which went down very nicely.
