Urgent - Lunch today - Dining Alone & Need to Kill Time in the Rain...

torta basilica Feb 10, 2007 06:42 AM

Just found out my friend's flight isn't getting in until later, can't check into the hotel until 3 & need to kill a lot of time & enjoy a great lunch today somewhere around Union Square/Market area. Would like a place where I'll be comfortable dining alone & won't be rushed out (& where I can get in this late without a resv). Already having lunch tomorrow at Scala's. Mid-budget/great food - any kind, although upscale comfort food in this weather would be nice!

You could also take a cab down to the Ferry Plaza and wonder in there and have lunch.

The Ferry Building's a great place to kill a few hours.

true. no need to walk back to Citizen Cupcake or anywhere else for dessert. Just walk around and see what appeals...

I third the Ferry Building suggestion. Hopefully you can leave your bag at the hotel so you won't have to lug around too much. Hop on a trolley or take a cab and you'll be at the Ferry Building in no time. I kill several hours there every time I go without even meaning to!

You can always take the Muni Metro to Embarcadero -- that way you don't even have to wait in the rain. I think the Muni Metro is a vastly overlooked way to get around downtown -- it's the same price as the surface transport, runs every couple of minutes, and is faster. If you're coming back within a couple of hours you can use a transfer and get a roundtrip for one fare.

In other words: go to the Ferry Building.

Then on to dessert at Citizen Cupcake, 3rd floor of the Virgin Megastore, 2 Stockton Street.

That's a bit of a walk from the Embarcadero in the rain, and I found it not at all comfortable as a place to hang out, with a shortage of comfortable chairs (not to mention that the cupcakes weren't that great).

Unfortunately, most of the Union Square/Embarcadero places that come to mind for me when I think of upscale comfort food aren't open for lunch on weekends. If you like oysters, the Hog Island Oyster Bar down at the Embarcadero is a fun place to eat alone. Another option closer to Union Square is Canteen, which I think is still open for lunch weekends (?), though you might not get a seat on short notice....

One more thought: if your idea of upscale comfort food is steak, then the counter overlooking the kitchen at Lark Creek Steak in the Westfield Center would definitely fill the bill, plus you could walk the mall afterwards....:-)

I'd go to the Westfield Center -- certainly a drier walk than to the Embarcadero. Also, just around the corner is Annabelle's [68 Fourth Street (between Market & Mission] which is a great place for a quiet, solo lunch. My personal fav in the neighborhood.

Westfield Center is a horrible plastic mall. Depressing and very un-San Francisco scene.

Amen to that. Ugh, that 'wichcraft needs to go away. Ferry Building Marketplace is the place to go, even in the rain.

There is nothing in there that I would eat, plus a hate food courts in Malls.

don't go to Westfield, might as well be in anywhere USA.
Tadich would be great on a rainy day, you could sit there & read the paper, have a leisurely lunch I don't think it's as crowded on the weeked so they wouldn't rush you out.

Seafood Saute - perfect. Dinner at Cafe Claude was awesome!

Thanks for reporting back. What did you have at Cafe Claude? It's a place I've always meant to try.

Excellent French onion soup (perfect for a rainy day!) and Porc au Miel - best pork dish I've ever had - with carmelized apples in a balsamic honey sauce that was so good I sopped the rest of it up with my bread. The pork was so juicy & tender - just an incredibly delicious dish! And such a great romantic atmosphere & music on a rainy night - too bad I was with my mom... ;-)

Great choice. Tadich's tagline is "the original cold (and rainy?) day restaurant."
