Looking for Dan Dan Noodles in SF like "old" Little Beijing's
It must have been four years ago when Little Beijing on Noriega Ave (in San Francisco) changed owners, and my husband and I are still missing the wonderful Dan Dan Mein they once had. We've gone back a couple of times to the restaurant, each time it seemed like there was a group of new people running the show. The last time we went, the General Tso's Chicken was great, but the Dan Dan noodles were still not as good as Steven's (Stephen's) who was the guy who cooked and delivered the food! We used to see him walking his dog in the neighborhood or going to garage sales sometimes, but haven't since the change over.
Anyway, the Dan Dan Mein had pork, peanut sauce, cucumbers, and noodles (I'm not sure what kind of noodles except that they weren't rice noodles or lo-mein noodles--I'd be interested in finding out).
When we recently went to Little Beijing, the sauce was runnier and was skimpy on the pork (or maybe didn't have the pork). It didn't seem to be as "hearty" or "spicy" or "robust" as the Dan Dan Mein and a sort of "crunch" was missing (I'm also not sure where the crunch would come from except maybe garlic?????).
So far we've tried to find THE noodles at
Taiwan Restaurant (he doesn't like the taste of the sauce),
Brandy Ho's (he thought it was too spicy and seemed to be just peanut butter),
Andy's (he didn't like it because it had chicken instead of pork, but he would have liked the dish if it hadn't been labeled as Dan Dan Mein),
San Tung (he didn't like the sauce)
Chef Jia's (he didn't like the sauce)
Five Happiness (he said it tasted too sour/vinegary)
George laments the lost of his Dan Dan Noodles and wants me to find out if anyone knows where Steven may have opened a new restaurant.
I think it would be easier for me just to ask if anyone knows of a Dan Dan Noodle that is like the one I described that you can get in San Francisco (my husband won't drive across the Oakland Bridge). I know it's hard since he already crossed off so many...
