Do you surf Chowhound less now..

..that it is so slow?? I used to hop around to different boards to find topics that interest me, but now I pretty much stay on one board and just get a little bored.

I have no problem hoping around very quickly (and back on and off to do work). I think it depends on your computer.

    1. MMRuth Feb 9, 2007 10:57 AM

I also have had no problems with speed - in fact, it seems faster to me since the changes.

      1. The Dairy Queen Feb 9, 2007 11:03 AM

I agree--it seems much faster to me, especially on the threads that have lots of replies.

          I surf less now that:
          - I have to click on the Boards triangle to get to the "Hot Posts." Yeah, so it's two extra steps;
          - I can't leave certain profile questions blank; and
          - I can't sort the search by date.

Why do you have to click on the triangle to get to "Hot Posts"? When I login or click on Boards, I go right to them.

Clicking on "Boards" doesn't tell which posts I've read or not read.

Why do you have to click twice to get to "Hot Posts"? If you just click on the word "Boards", you're there.

And - I just figured out a trick to leaving a profile question blank - in word, type in a couple of spaces, copy, and then replace the text you don't want by pasting this.

              Hope this helps!

Clicking on "Boards" takes me to "Latest Posts" not "My Unread Posts (aka Hot Posts)". Two different things.

Please don't be sorry! I appreciate all the help you've given in the past. =) Unfortunately, the word copy/paste trick didn't work for me. I'll keep playing w/it though. Thank you!

                      What about using elipses, though?

Just typing in ... in place of the text that's there now.

Yes, thank you! I've decided to go that route for one of the Qs, but using a single period instead of 3. =)

BTW, love your avatar...looks like an archway if you close one eye and squint the other.

I saw someone else just type elipses

                ...

in the sections of her profile she wanted to delete. It's not the same as deleting, I know, but gets you very close.

I keep a bookmark to Hot Posts so I don't have to bother with that silly triangle.

The connection I'm using is pretty fast (T1); when I click on the Boards arrow to show all the boards, it takes forever to come up-- "forever" being relative to how fast it was before, and how fast other, non-Chowhound, surfing is.

I don't know what kind of connection I have (work network, etc.), but it's pretty much instantaneous when I tocuh the arrow to take me to the Boards.

I just timed it, it took about 2.5 seconds from the time I click the down arrow to when the boards list pops up. That is forever by today's standards.

Likewise timed it and it was a blink, and would gues much less than 0.25 seconds.

I think its your line not the site.

Another change I don't like is you can't expand just one post, you gotta expand all.

I just did it and it was too fast for me to calculate how many seconds. I click and I'm on the list of Boards.

My connection in the office is fast, and I have high speed access at home, both computers are new(purchased within the last 6 months). I actually use Chowhound more every day .

                      I like the new format.

I just wish their was an "ignore" feature like there is on other sites I post on. I know I get tired of seeing the same recs for Chicago restaurants over and over from certain posters.

                      1. jfood Feb 9, 2007 11:32 AM

                        - I find the threads load faster since the change
                        - I do wish the search feature could perform reverse chronology listings
                        - Wish I could see the names of the posters versus the avatars (i find it somewhat useless at this point)
                        - I think we have experienced a new group of posters who are not used to a moderated site and the mods are doing a pretty good job weeding out.
                        - I think we have a new group of posters that are giving a new perspective on a few items and I think they are younger than the pre-CHOW days (both good and bad)

Overall I like the site with the aforementioned changes I wish could get fixed.

I surf less. I used to always read all the new posts each day. However, since the redesign the latest posts feature is only a single page going back about an hour (rather than a day).

Pretty foolish to "fix" something that wasn't broken.

                          1. Katie Nell Feb 9, 2007 12:23 PM

I surf less now, though I'm not really sure why. It seems that there are less posts on Home Cooking, and less posts from favorite posters, but I could be dreamin' that one up. There are still things about the site that I don't care for, but hopefully they will get fixed *sometime*.

I do surf CH less now. Not b/c it's slow (haven't noticed that) but b/c there are too many postings. I don't have the time or the interest to read through 20-30 postings on one subject (including this one).

                              1. BostonZest Feb 9, 2007 04:37 PM

I surf less because I used to subscribe to rss fees on a number of boards but had to unsubscribe because the new system send a feed for every post instead of one for each topic. Now I forget to go to the boards I used to watch.
