Great food in Asheville area?

We are visiting a friend who lives in Sylva, which I know is close to Asheville, and we want to take her out for a really nice dinner somewhere in the area. Any ideas?

We like The Boathouse on Lake Julian - it's actually in Arden, I think. South Asheville anyway. Mainly seafood, but good steaks too.

Though I have not been myself, I have a very good friend that visits Guadalupe's frequently, says they have an electic menu with great art. I believe it's in Sylva, but not sure.

Just make sure you get breakfast at Annie's Bakery while you are in Sylva. The buttermilk currant bread and the hot chocolate call to me.

Went to Annie's yesterday morning for pastries to bring home--very good stuff. Actually, it was Mardi Gras day and they had King Cakes--having lived in New Orleans, I couldn't resist and it was delicious. Really liked the cinnamon buns, too, and my son devoured the Russian Tea Cakes.

What do you define as close? Sylva is a good 50min=1hr from Asheville and if they live on a mountain top/side it could be a treacherous ride back from dinner if the weather is bad. Why not take them out in Waynesville - about 20-25 minutes, to Wildfire, there are a couple of other good restaurants closer to Sylva/Waynesville - try a search on this site.

Leah is right. If you're really dead set on an Asheville visit in February, you might consider just driving down for lunch (or brunch). That way you can head back before nightfall.

My favorite Asheville restaurant is Salsas on Patton avenue right where it hits Pack Square. Entrees range from $8-15 and they serve some of the most delicious and unique Afro-Caribbean combinations with beautiful platings. For really good Japanese I recommend Heiwa Shokudo on Lexington which is in the same price range, and rare in their quality of food.

What kind of food and how much do you want to spend?

Doesn't really matter how much we spend.

In that case, here's a pretty decent shortlist...

                    Salsa--Caribbean
                    Zambra--Tapas
                    Doc Chey's--Asian Fusion
                    Limones--SoCal Mexican
                    Gabrielle's, FIG--Continental
                    Tupelo Honey--Southern Fusion
                    Laughing Seed Cafe--Vegetarian/Vegan
                    Tomato Cuchina Latina--Salvadoran
                    Sunny Pointe Cafe--Breakfast
                    Early Girl Eatery--Breakfast
