Trendy, Moderately priced spot for College group

Hi Chowhounders!

So I am responsible for picking a restaurant this week to take a group of young 20-somethings from out of town. I was thinking of something Italian or asian fusion although I am leaning towards the latter. I'd like a place that is trendy but not too expensive...something along the lines of highline or spice market. I've heard good things about Lupa but am not sure about the atmosphere-- is it trattoria-ish? Any and all recommendations are welcome. We are looking to spend around $20 each (not including drinks) and will probably have a party of 10 or so. Thanks!

p.s. location-wise i'm thinking somewhere between soho and midtown (not interested in anything too far uptown or down in battery park)

How about a Tapas place? I've taken out of town friends to Xunta in the East Village and we always have a great time. I also thought you might find something fun in chinatown.

Been hearing bad things about this place recently, but Stanton Social, although neither Italian or Asian, might fit the bill. Clever food and lots of booze. Definitely trendy and moderately priced.

I was going to also say Stanton Social. Kuma Inn is also another good option in LES. I thought Modern Bar at the MoMA would be great for a light dinner and drinks, but that'll take you right up to your $20 limit with small plates. Diner 24, Elmo and Cafeteria in Chelsea all have a good vibe and are pretty reasonable. Then it's a short cab ride to the bars. Disco fries at Diner 24 with brie, truffles and herbs are pretty killer.

There are tons of Italian places in the East Village that are approximately in that price range (e.g Lavagna), although when you factor in wine and tip, it'll be hard to stay exactly under 20...

the above-mentioned Saigon Grill and Republic fit your price point, but they have lousy food...i'd hate to leave 10 out-of-towners with the impression that that's the best NYC can do...

you might check out Tigerland, on Ave.A...it's SE Asian quasi-fusion (more like traditional dishes, updated w/ top-notch ingredients)...they can definitely take a party of 10...and their early-bird special is an incredible deal...the shrimp w/ carmelized garlic and berkshire bacon is a wonderful, succulent dish...the owners and staff are sweet...do a search and you'll find a few reviews of the place...

The new fig & olive in meatpacking is fun.

You might have a better chance of staying within budget if you go to Otto and share the apps, veggies and pizzas vs lupa - as it would be tough to get out of there for 20 bucks without drinks. But, you will certainly need to make a reservation for a big party and it has a trendier vibe than Lupa. The new Saigon Grill located at University Place and 12th St. may fit your budget and is less chic than Spice Market but, has nice enough interiors and definitely better food that Spice....I don't think they take reservations but, is huge and have a lot of huge round tables that may fit your group and a nice bar area up-front.
