Fresh Carob pods in LA - Tu bishSh'vat higi'a

In any case, I was looking around for fresh chewable carob pods, traditional for 15 sh'vat. Years ago you could find them in hippie stores and the old kind of natural produce places, etc. Today, it seems that all the carob is processed into ersatz chocolate.

Has anyone seen the pods available in LA or elsewhere?

  1. In Cleveland they are often available in limited quantities at Unger's Kosher Market. This year in Tampa we had my mother in law send them.

Hi, I tried calling Unger's and they had no idea what I was talking about. Do they call it something different? I asked for Carob Pods?

    2. well, there are many carob trees lining gardner street between beverly and third. i don't know what the soil chemical stuff is like on a city tree, but you might be able to get them for free... good luck!

      1. Any idea where I might find Carob Pods? I can't locate them anywhere!

        1. There are carob trees around LA, although I don't know when they are ripe. I know there are some around gardener and Beverly, and Las Palmas and Oakwood in Hancock Park.

          1. The Erewhon market at Beverly next to the Grove Ave (stanley) has them - but they're dried.
