Brunch/Lunch...Maverick or Universal Cafe?
I've got plans for a family brunch tomorrow and we've narrowed it down to either Maverick or Universal Cafe, I've never been to either and am wondering which you all like better and if there are any stand-out dishes to order. I'm also open to other suggestions if you have some spot along the same lines that you think is better than either of these two.
I like both a lot, but I think I'd give the edge to Universal Cafe. I more partial to Universal's atmosphere / interior, and the menu is more exciting to me. If it's nice enough, you can sit outside. The menu changes all the time, so who knows what they might have. I hope you'll report back!
The soft scrambled eggs w/ whatever they're throwing in there is great. Just know that it comes with a salad, not potatoes. Sacrilege you say? Nay say I...I was doubtful but it is actually a good combo and it was nice not to waddle home for a change.
We ended up at Universal which was a hit with the fam. Nice menu we tried
Huevos Mojado - like a huevos rancheros, but on what appeared to be a thick handmade corn tortilla. Great sauce and the salad and jicama slaw on the side were great. Could have used a little more sour cream and the beans were a little underdone, but overall a great dish.
French toast with poached pear with huckleberry compote and myer lemon cream - best french toast I have ever tasted! Not too sweet, just eggy enough. Yum!
Soft scrambled eggs with spinach, feta, and sundried tomato pesto - with sald as noted by chaddict, the sundried tomato pesto was especially tasty.
Cobb salad - beautiful, but I didn't get a bite.
Ginger lemonade - very fresh, not too sweet, good ginger flavor, sugar frosted pint glass.
Service was good, friendly, if a little slow, we were also rushed out a bit at the end, but that's understandable with a saturday wait. Portions were all very large. Room is nice sf industrial-chic, but a little loud at times. Total for 5 after tax and tip with 2 coffees, 1 lemonade, 1 iced tea, 1 diet coke - $85.
