Indian/Pakistani in Arlington

I got lost last week taking an Indian friend to my favorite kabob place--Ravi--and stumbled on India Curry House on Wilson Blvd. We took a chance, and wow! this place is pretty good. Their lunch buffet had a delicious butter chicken, tasty karahi, juicy tandoori, several vegetarian dishes, a nice surprise overall. It got me thinking, two places this good and so close to each other. Are there more?

  1. Tandori nights in Clarendon is pretty good. A little more upscale then the Inida Curry House.

    1. Sangam (on the corner of Glebe and Fairfax Drive in Ballston) has a good weekend lunch buffet. The food is generally flavorful, but not outstanding (I'd love to find a place that has a Vindaloo with real heat). The Delhi Dhaba takeout in Courthouse is better.

      1. Another attempt at Ravi ended in failure due to mobbing crowds. Went on to Delhi Club and had a so-so experience off the menu (no lunch buffet). We both agreed that India Curry House was a better choice overall. I have done Food Factory, Ravi, Delhi Dhaba (agree, this one is good) and have compiled the following, if there is anything missed or comments, would appreciate them:

Saran, 703-533-3600, vegetarian buffet closed on Monday, 5151 Lee Hwy Arlington, VA map: http://www.google.com/maps?q=5151+Lee...

Raaga, 703-998-7000, lunch buffet, 5872 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, VA map: http://www.google.com/maps?q=5151+Lee...

Sangam, 703-524-2738, lunch buffet, 1211 N. Glebe Road Arlington, VA map: http://www.google.com/maps?q=1211+N+G...

If the original Ravi Kabob location is too crowded, the new one (just across the street next to the CVS) often isn't, and the food is just as great.

It was not open last friday at lunchtime. I thought I read it is only open for dinner, but can't confirm.

The last time I was there a couple of weeks ago, the new place is still open only for dinner.

I read the sign on the door when it first opened, and not only was it not open for lunch, but they only seat families (or what appears to be a family) - single diners didn't seem welcome. We're supposed to go across the street, I guess.

you put the same link for Saran under Raaga

          3. At Saran you can order off the regular menu. Purely Vegetarian. A good place to know about, but I wish the tart and spicy components would not take a back seat to the sweetness.

In nearby Arlandria, the Bombay Curry Company has appropriately hot and crunchy Bhel Puri as well as incredible Tandoori chicken wings.

            1. May I expand on your request to include the former East Pakistan? There's a Bangladeshi place about three stores up the way from Saran on Lee Hwy: House of Biryani. Biryanis are good, but the butter chicken is great. Good sized portions.
