I wanted to buy a gift certificate for dinner for 2 at a restaurant in the Petaluma/Sonoma area for my oldest friend's 40th Birthday. I do not know the area at all but would really appreciate some recs for a place that is above all, good, but also either chic, renowned, innovative (in a positive way), consistently high quality, nice atmoshpere, etc. Someplace that would be a special night.

Any recommedations are greatly appreciated!

I had very nice experiences at both Cafe Le Haye and The Girl and The Fig last September and posted here about them. They are at opposite corners of the square in Sonoma.

Petaluma has myriad choices: My favorite, Cucina Paradiso (my choice for birthdays, etc., because their food is consistently wonderful), Graffiti (atmosphere, imaginative presentations), Risibisi (I've only been there once, but it was great), Sooze (small, delicious, lots of personal attention) and Central Market (flavor New Orleans style, emphasis on slow food) come to mind. You can't really go wrong with any of these.

If you want to go to Sebastopol, I always like the K&L Bistro on Main St. Apparently the folks over at Michelin like it too, they gave it one star. If you're feeling a bit adventurous, you could go to The Underwood which is in Graton. A very cool urban feeling restaurant way out in the sticks.

Hiros in Petaluma- great ambience and food- I went there for my birthday.

Zazzles in Petaluma- solid food, but a tad noisy.

If you want to give a Coffee gift certificate-- Aqus Cafe on 2nd and H in Petaluma-- great new coffehouse in town

Would easily recommend Girl & the Fig, especially in the spring when outside garden seating is available.
