La Mich Paleteria - Mexican Ice Creamery

For those of you who are looking for more unusual ice cream and popsicle options on the Eastside, be sure to check out La Mich Paleteria, in the Target Shopping Center in Duarte. When I was there, the ice cream choices included vanilla raisin, mamey (a fruit similar to mango), butter strawberry and key lime pie. But it was their popsicles or actually paletas that really drew my attention.

The range of flavors was amazing. I had the chamoy paleta and it definitely delivered on the apricot-chili flavor that you'd expect from chamoy sauce. You could also get your choice of spicy mango, mamey, strawberries & cream, bubble gum, dulce de leche and so much more. The paletas can also be dipped in chocolate and covered with rainbow sprinkles, nuts or chocolate sprinkles for those with that extra sweet tooth.

Along with the ice cream and paletas, they also serve Mexican coffee, Mexican Hot Chocolate and other hot beverages. I think it's really nice to have a shop like this in my hometown. :)

Is this the same as La Michoacana? If so, they are available all over the place (at least in my neighborhood). The flavors sound familiar. My favorite is rompope.

Glad you liked the place. :) Now we all just have to all be regular customers so that it'll stick around for a long time.

I definitely recommend this place as well. It's quite tasty and reminds me of the ones from Mexico.

There's a Mexican paleteria on Sepulveda in Culver City as well - in a strip mall just south of the McDonalds Golden Arches. Been there only once last summer and they had a very respectable selection of paletas - many, if not all of the flavors mentioned above, but I don't know if they're still open. Chunks of real fruit - If I recall correctly, the Jackfruit paleta even had seeds.

Mateo's, 4929 Sepulveda Blvd, Culver City, in a chaotic little strip just south of Lucerne and north of the Ballona Creek bridge. (There is another Mateo's on Pico near Crenshaw.) Mateo's has become a regular stop for us; I pick up about a dozen paletas at a time ($1.50 ea.), take 'em home, and dole 'em out to PayOrPlay Jr. as his #1 favorite dessert (but naturally, more than a few get eaten by the resident adults as well). They don't necessary have the wild diversity of choices as some east-side paleterias but they do tend to have maybe a couple dozen flavors at once: everything from strawberry cream to leche quemada, guava to chocolate w/sprinkles. And unlike a lot of ice cream places, they're open early to serve smoothies (vampiros, etc.) and fruit bowls so it's easy to drop by when convenient.

Heading even further off topic, there's a Thai place in that same shopping mall--it looks very run of the mill from the outside and I'm usually there early in the morning anyway so I have never tried it, but it does have the semi-wonderful name "Thai Klang Dong" and thus I keep thinking it might be worth a shot. They even have a website http://www.thaiklangdong.com/index.html . Anyone ever checked it out?

Yeah buddy - that's the place... and Klang Dong is pretty good as well - at least by Westside standards.

I posted about this place when we discovered it over the summer. We ended up buying a whole box of popsicles to try the different flavors - all were good. We haven't been back since, so I'm glad to hear they're still in business.
