Good but inexpensive restaurant in the upper west village/chealsea area?

My best friend's mom is in town for a couple nights and she wants to take us out to dinner. I want to impress her with a nice restaurant and good food, but I don't want to stick her with too high of a bill. I work at 8th ave and 14th St, and we're going to dinner right after. Any suggestions?

Valdino West on Hudson and Bank. Great food (Italian), warm service, cozy space. You can't go wrong.
