Need recommendation - downtown... Anti-Winterlicious!

I'm looking for a restaurant recommendation to celebrate a birthday on Thursday night, for group of four.

1. downtown (south of college, west of shaw-ish, east of jarvish-ish)
2. mid-price (under $30 mains)
3. atmosphere that makes you want to relax and linger
4. no, no, no winterlicious!

Current contenders are Rosebud, the Swallow (Ossington), le Select or Terroni... perhaps Golden Thai.

Anyone with another suggestion or feedback on current picks?

  1. I have recently been to StarFish. Great main course and fresh seafood !

    1. Starfish is great, but I not sure if it falls under mid-range prices. It is tough during Winterlicious because so many of the good places participate. If you are willing to go a little further east, try POP Bistro. We did a foursome last summer and had a great meal, great service (although a little quirky) and pretty reasonably priced. It is very small, so reservation are a necessity. Check other comments at the link below:

All the main course in Starfish are under $30, well it can get expensive if you order lots of oyster/urchin.

I love Starfish and seriously considered going there (for those on the "fish and chips" thread - this is my fave fish and chips!), but one of our parties is a slightly fussy eater and not-so enthusiastic about fish (sigh).

      2. I wouldn't cross the street to spit on the Swallow. Go to the Sparrow instead. Great selection of beer by the bottle and a cute bartender. Good music and atmosphere too.

Sparrow! - I meant the Sparrow... dunno what I was thinking!

        2. Avoid Terroni - horrible service and disappointing pizza. Their salads are pretty good, though you may not be able to "linger" in the crowded atmosphere. Golden Thai is average. I think you can do much better at JK, Beer Bistro, Oyster Boy, Swan, Lee, Japango, Kultura, Trevor, etc.

          1. I've never had a bad meal at Terroni - I especially like the pastas although they are generally very richly sauced. It is a casual and extremely popular spot - personally I find the service appropriate for the kind of place it is. Friendly, but you may have to wait a while for your food (not servers fault, simply the price of popularity). It's a great place to have a fun evening with friends, and won't break the bank account.

Re: Sparrow, make sure to reserve as some evenings are very busy, and check that there isn't a special event happening because it could mean a very loud evening - the back room is often used by bands and other performers. The food is decent, not stellar, good deal on 'wine flights'. After, you can just cross the street and go south to sweaty betty's for more drinks.

I love Swan too, but find the booths a bit more small for 4 for an extended period of time. I recommend reserving the table at the back.
