smoked mackerel at whole food in atwater

I'd been idly looking for whole smoked mackerel for a long time in Los Angeles. The grocery "Whole Food For Life" in Atwater Village has them for $5 per pound. I just had some for lunch and it was delicious. Note that this store is not the chain "Whole Foods" but a smaller independent grocery with a slightly different name.

Good cured meat selection too.

Yes, this is a good market. It's like a mini-Jons Marketplace, with a selection of fetas and olives and cured meats. There's also an extensive pastry counter. Produce is often quite good, and cheap... I got some nice yellow tomatoes there just the other day.

I just bought a smoked mackerel (and a smoked whitefish, both kosher) at the wonderful Sunland Produce (in Sunland at the corner of Sunland Blvd. and Glenoaks). We ate the mackerel sliced with cream cheese and sliced onions on trader's stoned wheat crackers. Wow, delicious. Can't wait to eat the whitefish.

Sunland Produce is worth a visit for any food lover. They have a huge produce department with great prices and lots of variety. There are always alternative produce items: persian cucumbers, quince, lady apples, etc., everything's fresh 'cause they do so much volume, and there's an interesting selection of middle eastern and russian specialty items. One whole dairy case is devoted to different types of feta, if that gives an idea.
