Had a nice lunch with Mom at the SF Chinatown branch of D&A Cafe. We arrived at 11:45am or so ..... just beat the lunch rush. Went with the $16.99 deal for any 3 dishes off a 110 dish list - this also includes a small tureen of the house soup and a generous amount of white rice. We chose the no. 82 - Combination Eggs with Spinach, no. 64 HaiNan chicken and no. 22 - braised oysters in clay pot. No. 82 was a generous portion of spinach with preserved eggs and regular eggs served in a 10 inch pyrex glass plate. No 64 was a well seasoned chicken with ginger sauce, fried peanuts and some pickled vegetables. The chicken was nicely cooked - a bit of pink near the bone ... the white meat was cooked through but still moist. A shade less cooking would have been better but it was still enjoyable. No. 22 had a lot of perfectlly cooked soft tofu along with some BBQ pork slices and fried oysters - all in a savory brown sauce. The oysters were sweet and briny but the tofu was my favorite part - soft and custardy inside. We ate about half of the food - plenty of leftovers for lunch. The house soup was OK - price was right. The food was generally well seasoned - think we just added another spot to our lunch rotation.
D&A Cafe. 670 Broadway St. SF 415. 788-2822 (talk about a lucky phone number!)
If you get there from 7-11am or from 3-6pm or 10pm - 2am there is a menu with dishes for $3.65 each.

I have had serveral meals there and found the food a good value for the price. I only wish I could order more and eating everything there. Too few mouths mean take out for the next meal. I did not find some of the take out as good as when it was fresh.

I do keep a menu in the car. Can't teach a old dog new trick

D&A's version of Hainan chicken didn't come with rice - it came with fried peanuts and pickled vegetables. I usually look forward to the rich chicken taste of the rice and sometimes it also can come with a nice chicken broth as well (but not here) You can click on the photo above.....

Is the D&A Cafe in Chinatown significantly different from the branch on Clement? I remember going to the one in Clement in the past, and though the price was always right, I was never super impressed with their food, so I started to go to other restaurants on Clement and in the area instead.
