Sushi in Pasadena?

Looking for a friend who is seeking a sushi resto in Pasadena. He goes to Z's all the time (in Alhambra) so is looking for an alternative.

No Kabuki, please :)

Thanks,
CK

agree with above poster, yoshida is probably the best in the SGV, but unfortunately it's not saying much.

mia in eagle rock is a little better, but not owned by japanese.

also, mountain view in sierra madre.

why not just jump on the fwy to the val and go to sushi row?

    life's too short.

Blue Fish on Honolulu in Montrose ( a little further west than Pasadena but still close)
nice atmosphere - delicious cooked Japanese as well as sushi.

Sushi Roku, Old Town, I like the atmosphere, a little pricey, but had an excellent meal. Only been there once, so I don't know how consistant. Waitress was extremely knowlegable, and made great suggestions.

there is a good hole in wall called Sushiya on the corner of altadena drive and foothill
the chef I heard is a sushi instructor
it is in a small corner shopping mall with La Estrella

Sushiya is ok. They have an all you can eat menu. I think they put too much rice. The rice sometimes isn't packed as nicely and falls apart. The chefs are pretty nice there and work pretty quickly. The place is really small. 4 tables fitting 2 to a table and the bar can fit probably 7-10 people. They close sunday so don't go. I like the mackeral there the one time i went.

Japon Bistro which also has greal Sake and Soju (?). Also try A's on Fairoaks which is alot more cozy since you snuggle with stranges at the sushi bar. Fumito (when in a good mood) is a wonderful sushi chef.

Shaab located on Raymend one block north of Union, right next to Chado Tea Room and Cafe Bizou. Excellent sushi and shabu.

Yoshida on Huntington Drive in San Marino is pretty good. It's open for dinner only though and there can be a wait sometimes. My friend and I had a lot of fun at Gin Sushi on Colorado last time we went as well

I like this place. It's open for lunch before 2pm. Closes 2:30 - 5:00. The quality is pretty good. The price range is decent and they give pretty good amounts of fish on their sushi. They have live uni at times too. Toro prices vary by day. I'd recommend this place!

Have a suggestion in Arcadia, Mako on Live Oak. Really good. I miss Victor at Yahmaha, he closed up shop a few years back. Anyone remember him?

Ditto on Mako in Monvoriva (not be confused with the Mako on Beverly ...)

Wow - surprised @ the Mako recommendation. Once the new owner took over 2 years ago, I couldn't handle the chefs fighting amongst themselves and the owner who was better...lost my appetite.

Dont sit at the Sushi bar. The experience is much more pleasant as long as the waitresses are on the ball. The service can be poor when it is really busy, and don't let them sit you in the "back" room ever!

Really? Have heard not-so-great things about that place since Toshi left to go back to Z's....

Try "Japon Bistro" located at 927 E. Colorado Blvd. (between Lake & Mentor Aves.) Pasadena, CA 91106 (626) 744-1751. Definitely sit at the Sushi Bar!

I second Japon Bistro. It's more about the fusion rolls. Sitting at the sushi bar will include imbibing with the sushi chef (sometimes ;) ). Which leads to my next thought -- they have quite an eclectic sake selection.
