  1. People's opinions as to what constitutes "over the top pricey" can differ substantially. That said, here are some restaurants that I consider the best or special.

    In the Theater District:

    Town, on 56th St., b/t 5th & 6th Avs. - http://www.townnyc.com
    and
    dbBistro Moderne, on 44th St., b/t 5th & 6th Avs. - http://www.danielnyc.com/dbbistro

    On the periphery:

    Alto, on 53rd, b/t 5th & Madison - http://www.altorestaurant.com

    A short distance away:

    Keens, on 36th St., b/t 5th & 6th - http://www.keens.com

If those are too rich for your budget or don't appeal, here are two restaurants that are less expensive and, while I wouldn't call them special, will provide an excellent dining experience:

    Marseille, on the corner of 9th Av. & 44th St. - http://www.marseillenyc.com

    West Bank Cafe, on 42nd St., b/t 9th & 10th Avs. - http://www.westbankcafe.com

    1. Do Molyvos, the upscale Greek on 7th ave and 50-something. I love the atmosphere and service; appitizers (meze) are especially outstanding. If you don't like wine, get some ouzo or Greek beer.

Some people might think it's past its prime, but I keep coming back.

      1. Molyvos is a good choice. If it weren't a Monday I'd have mentioned Sugiyama.

        1. What about Hell's Kitchen? Great food, cozy, "NY loungey" atmosphere... I love it.

          1. I would do Eatery (Hell's Kitchen) or Bar Americain (midtown 50's).
