San Rafael - Jasmine Market - Persian donuts & ice cream (from San Jose)

This is one of the best Persian markets I've seen in the area ... lots of breads, a good selection in the dairy case, rice, nuts & dried fruit, lots of groceries (the pomegranite jam is calling my name), cookbooks, a little deli in back and a few fresh veggies. Zand has more deli items, but Jasmine had a lot more of everything else.

In the deli case were big fat yeasty custard filled donuts that looked identical to Polish paczi. They are made in a bakery in San Jose and delivered on Friday. Unfortunately it was late in the day and they suffered as any donut sitting too long. There was a lot of oil in these so that didn't help the freshness factor.

They also have Persian Ice Cream ... rosewater & falooda ... from someplace in San Jose too. I didn't go home right away so I had to pass on it.

Bread deliveries are on Tuesdays & Fridays.

  1. I tried the Persian ice cream today which is from Aram Pastry of San Jose.

It wasn't bad, but I wish I had read the ingrediant list first: milk, nonfat milk, sugar, corn syrup, whey, guar gum, mono and dyglycerates, calcium sulfate, polysorbate 80, celulose gum carageenum, pasturized vanilla, rose water

... and with all of that they left out the fact there was lots of chopped pistachio in it. Really other than being teeth-aching sweet, it tasted pretty good. Too bad they put all that 'stuff' in it.

I asked if they sold anything special for Persian New Year. Not really, but starting Wednesday they will have fresh and smoked fish available.

Dropped by Trader Joe's next door to see, given all the Persian people in the area, if they carried anything for that ethnicity. Not really. They had some Middle-Eastern flat breads in the back of the store, but I'm not sure how different that would be from any other TJ's.
