Eastern NM - any good eats?

Working a job all next week all over eastern NM - have to visit sites in Carlsbad, Artesia, Roswell, Ft. Sumner, Santa Rosa, Tucumcari, Clovis, & Portales, possibly Logan and Clayton (uncertain at present). Anything chowish available in these towns? Won't have any chance to roam to Santa Fe or Albuquerque. Thanks for any advice.

  1. Leals in Clovis is a Muleshoe-based Mexican-Mexican food chain that has always done well by me. You're naming Cattle Baron territory, too - a SE NM steak chain with a decent salad bar that takes me back to 1980.

I'm sure you can find plenty of good mom'n'pops - stop a cop and ask him where he eats. It's never done me wrong.

Agree with Cattle Baron recommendation ... pretty sure there is one in Roswell ... there is also on Hobbs if your in the area.

    2. My bible for New Mexican food is "Culinary New Mexico." In Roswell, the author recommends a Taste of Europe for authentic eastern European fare, The Crash Down Diner for fueling food w/ a side of UFO fun and Nuthin' Fancy for well-done standard American fare. Not a single restaurant recommendation in any of those other towns. Too bad next week isn't farmers' market or Chile cookoff season.

      1. If you are in Tucumcari and can get over to Amarillo there are supposedly some good Laotion restaurants on old Rt 66. Also, the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari is a kick from the past.
