Just had the version from Couler cafe and it was good. Where can i find these lamb/beef beauties? I'd prefer to grill them on my own, so recs for butcher shops, specialty stores appreciated. I live in the city but will travel :)

Baron's Meats in Alameda and Berkeley carries housemade Merguez -- all lamb, including the casings.

Do you recall the price? I wouldn't mind trying a cheaper source than FC. And where is Baron's in Berkeley?

I think they're $5.99/lb. Baron's in Berkeley is on Claremont Ave. between Ashby and College in the Star Market.

The Fatted Calf makes a good version, similar to those I got hooked on in Montreal. They sell at the Saturday FPFM. $9/lb., I think.

I've had good ones from Fatted Calf, Cafe Rouge, and Indus Foods.

Thanks for the link. I'll have to track down the Halal butcher "on Geary near Leavenworth"

I was surprised to learn that Fatted Calf's merguez contained pork fat, since they taste so similar to the unquestionably Halal versions I've had in Montreal.

            No wonder they're so good!

I will only add that Rosamunde on lower Haight next to Toronado has fantastic Merguez.

And they list (or they did) the suppliers so you could track it down that way..

Coleur and Maman use the Fabrique Delices merguez, search will turn up sources.

Instead of rubbing elbows with the swell folks at FPFM today, I headed west in quest of the source for merguez alluded to in the thread cited by Robert Lauriston above. I found a place called "Salama Halal Butcher" on Geary a few steps west of Jones (not "near Leavenworth" as reported in the earlier thread) that had merguez. They're made of a lamb/beef mix, smaller (about 12/lb.) than those I had been buying from The Fatted Calf guy (about 8/lb.) They are also less spicy and less fatty, thus not quite as tasty, but are only $3.99/lb. compared to $9 at the Fatted Calf and $10-$15/lb the various Fabrique Delice vendors were asking.
