Balthazar substitute?

My SO and want to go to a special dinner tonight. We love Balthazar, but have been there a bunch. Can anyone recommend a restaurant that offers similar quality food, preferably south of 14th St or in Brooklyn? No Pastis, though; I've never been that impressed with its food.

Thanks in advance!

Isn't it weird how Pasti's is by the same people as Balthazar and nowhere near as impressive??? Balthazar melts in your mouth man!!!

Park Slope French bistros leave much to be desired. I've never had a good experience at Belleville, Moutarde or Cocotte. PS has many great restaurants, but just not French.

I'll add Ici and Chez Oskar to the "recommended" list.

              Raoul's in Soho
              360 in Red Hook
              Cocotte in Park Slope

If other than French - I highly recommend Applewood and Stone Park, both in Park Slope.

Thanks for the suggestions! I've never been too impressed with Bar Tabac or Belleville and am definitely going for a place that can provide the same (or better) caliber of food as Balthazar--don't necessarily need a bistro. I'm thinking maybe Red Cat? Thoughts?

                  Other French bistros:
                  Manhattan
                  Lucien on 1st Ave
                  Le Gigot on Cornelia St

                  Brooklyn
                  Bar Tabac on Smith St
                  Belleville in the Slope

None of these are quite as big or as good as Balthazar, but you'll get your bistro fix.

Five Points in Soho or if you're in Brooklyn, Al Di La, Tempo, and Sette in Park Slope are excellent.
