If you can squeeze in some Indian snacks, hit Dimple, on 30th Street btw. Fifth and Broadway. They serve dishes that you won't find in a lot of Indian restaurants. I love their bhel puri the most, with their masala coffee a very close second place. One order of anything on their menu's enough to feed two, and they're cheap. Ambience is very much lacking, but hey, go there for the amazing food!

Barbes on E. 36th Street off 5th Avenue is very good sort of french/moraccan fare and mezzes. Very nice atmosphere, always busy, very lively, moderately priced for NYC. Very nice owners. Only drawback is seating is a bit tight. They've only been in the neighborhood a couple of years but have become extremely popular.

also for brunch penelope on lex and 30th street is great. very casual atmospher with great american favorites.
kalystans on lex and 28th street is also amazing for sandwiches - felafel, baba ganoush, and a lential casserole thing mujadara (my spelling is pretty bad on this...)

For breakfast, you might try Chez Laurence, a cafe, on the corner of Madison & 38th St., or Sarge's Deli, on 3rd Av., b/t 36th & 37th Sts.
For dinner, there are many good options.
Keens, on 36th St., b/t 5th & 6th Avs., has been in that location since 1885. Excellent steaks, chops, etc., and unmatchable Old NY ambiance.
Ethos, on 3rd Av., b/t 33rd & 34th Sts., serves delicious Greek food in a bustling taverna-style setting.
Cosette, on 33rd St., b/t 3rd & Lex, is a tiny, sweet French bistro with very good food.
Ali Baba, on 34th St., b/t 2nd & 3rd Avs., serves very good Turkish food in pleasant surroundings.

I agree with all RGR says, however, I sadly have to say that Chez Laurence has slid downhill lately. It kills me to even write that, as I'm a long standing patron.
They lost their pastry chef a couple of weeks back - a 70 year guy who made one of the best croissants in the city. He was apparently quite po'd over the new management take-over situation, wasn't informed about it, etc. and decided to go off on his own and is now making chocolates from what I understand.
They have had a difficult time finding a new chef although supposedly they just hired someone from the CI who has not yet begun to fully cook for them. So, they have been importing many (most) of their pastries from places such as Zaros and Balthazar - all of which are inferior to what was there prior. What they are still able to make on the premises looks nothing like it did before.
Having said that, I did do a take-out of eggs over easy the other morning and they were as perfect as always, so if a regular breakfast is what you seek, I think you'll still do fine. But for pastries, I would steer you elsewhere for the time being.
Again, it kills me to say this. I've had issues with them for other reasons over the years (management mostly and the pricing) but I love the people that work there and the quality of the food has been great overall.
