drobbia Jan 25, 2007 06:06 PM

Am finnaly turning 54 (after 7 years at 53) AND HAVE 3 LOVELY LADIES TAKING ME OUT TOMORROW FOR A B'DAY DINNER.
They know I'm a chowhound - will I be dissapointed with Trader Vic's?

You will not be disappointed. It's wonderful.

Sorry to throw a wrench in the works. TV's is overpriced, super-tourista, unidentifiable food, amateur hour service AWFUL. You're better off getting a few drinks with umbrellas there (which aren't bad) and walking to Jack in the Box for dinner.

On the plus side, they have THE most impressive bathroom I've seen in any restaurant in the area.

I'll second that emotion. TVs is good for happy hour, but I wouldn't waste my money on dinner there. Curious about brunch though.

I am a huge tiki fanatic, so I love Trader Vic's. However, I would encourage going only for cocktails and Cosmo Tidbits. Dinner prices are quite high for pretty mediocre quality.

Agreed. Just went there tonight to cash in a $20 gift certificate. Bar area has a fun vibe, retro tiki decor, and very good drinks. We had one of the better Mai Tais and gin martinis I've tasted in a long time. But the food, meh. Oysters on the half shell were fine, ribs were lacking in flavor but the mustard dipping sauce worked well. The chef should be embarrassed about the caesar salad: no flavor, pre-packaged quality ingredients, a parmesan "crisp" that seemed like it was cooked hours earlier so it was a chewy blob. Burger is a bizarre meatloafy sandwich thing; interesting flavor, but not a satisfying burger. Service was nice but we had to ask them to slow down the food after they started slamming us with plates just after we received our cocktails. Would go back for drinks, but I can't recommend this place for food.

HOWEVER, we've been to the Father's Day brunch (in Emeryville) 2 years in a row, and it's really quite good.

My meal was at the Palo Alto location.
