New fast-food dim sum place on Larkin
Somebody mentioned seeing a "dim sum" sign in the window of a new restaurant on Larkin St. near Golden Gate. My ears perked up when I read this, since I am a dim sum addict working in this Chinese-food deprived neighborhood.
I wandered into this place today. (Didn't see a name, sorry.) It's a small, cafeteria style place with about 10 tables in the back. There's a steam table with 8 or 10 standards, two big steamers, and another section with fried stuff. The menu lists about 15 types of dim sum; baked, steamed and fried. Each plate (3 pieces) is $2. I tried the har gow, shui mai, and some sort of chopped pork and peanut thing. They only had 2 left of those, so they gave me 1 potsticker.
The dim sum turned out to match the decor. It was mostly pretty uninteresting. Not awful, but dull. The shrimp in the har gow didn't have much taste, and the meat/peanut mixture was bland. The wrappers were chewy. The shui mai wasn't too bad, and the pot sticker was probably the best of the bunch. And you can't beat the price.
If you work in this area, as I do, and your attitude is "Bad dim sum is better than no dim sum," as mine is, then this is an ok occasional place for lunch. Although I'm seriously considering getting a new job that is closer to decent dim sum. Sigh.
Thanks for the report. I guess it joins Lee's Sandwiches in the new but mediocre chow on Larkin category.
There's another new dim sum place opening soon in that area as well. I can't remember the name but it's on O'Farrell at Leavenworth right next to Lahore Karahi. There's been a coming soon sign on the window for a month now but I'll try it and post once they finally open.
