Dinner Border of NorthBeach/Financial?

I am going tomorrow (thursday) evening to an event at Istituto Italiano di Cultura
425 Washington. The website says its near the Transamerica Building. Any recommendations for a restaurant nearby that is (1) relatively inexpensive and (2) likely to have some nice dishes for a no-flesh vegetarian. Thanks, I appreciate all the advice I get on this board, its been amazing!!

Interesting challenge! North Beach is famous around the world for its restaurants, but the clear majority of those places are Italian or Sicilian-Italian and meatless dinners are likely going to be confined to pesto pasta and such. The Financial District is famous among San Franciscans (I work in the FD and can bear witness to this) for a general lack of restaurants of just about any kind. There are exceptions, of course, and some very fine exceptions, but I personally know of no vegetarian or vegan dinner restaurants nearby. If there are any, I am confident someone will correct me very soon.

I suggest you take a look at the Friends of Animals San Francisco Vegan Restaurant Guide, which you can find here: http://www.friendsofanimals.org/progr...

I work in the area - I would recommend CItizen Thai and the Monkey - ask for the Monkey menu - everything is under $10.

Sai's is decent cheap Vietnamese. It's half a block away.

Bocadillos is really good but relatively expensive for tapas.

On what map is Belden Place 2.5 blocks from any address on Washington? I count a minimum of four (Washington to Clay, to Sacramento, to California, to Pine).

Right you are. Google was flaky.

Caffe Macaroni - right near TA bldg, two locations across the street from each other. One more casual, should have veggie. Friendly bunch, v.good food, never had a bad meal. www.caffemacaroni.com

How about Helmand, three blocks North on Broadway? The food is Afghani. Not an upscale place and not too expensive, bit no hole-in-the-wall either.

There are a number of vegetarian options - I recommend the braised pumpkin, and the pan-fried eggplant. I believe they have a vegetable stew as well.

If you don't know this area -- there are a number strip clubs, so not the nicest location. No worse than many of the other North Beach spots though.
