West Midtown Margaritas

Looking for the best margarita (and decent Tex-Mexican food) in West Midtown (40th - 60th Street). NOT looking for anything too chi-chi (i.e. Hell's Kitchen or Rosa Mexicana).

Thanks!

i guess arriba arriba would qualify as somewhat "decent" on both fronts - 51st or so and 9th. Although I haven't been there in some time.

I'll second Arriba Arriba. The food and Margaritas are great, decent price (although they do have a dj spinning techno on alot of nights)

El Centro has pretty good margaritas and not very good food.

Ding ding ding! Precisely what I would have said.

Vynl also has good margaritas, believe it or not.

Dined at Arriba Arriba last night pre-theater (we got last minute tickets, and had no reservations anywhere else). At best I would say the food here was "decent". It has your standard "Mexican" (american version) dishes. I didn't think my margarita was great, but I usually upgrade to a premium tequila and forgot to ask the waiter, so the tequila was house to begin with. The music was loud, but fun. I wasn't displeased with my experience here, but I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to visit again, with so many other great places in the neighborhood. (Last time I was at El Centro, I particularly enjoyed the chilaquiles... but it's been awhile, so I can't quite compare adequately..)

I've had many margaritas in this party of town. (Margarita Tour!). I would not recommend Arriba Arriba for either food or margaritas -- not very good at all in my opinion. I recommend Tacocina (9th Ave, between 48th and 49th). Also, I El Centro is decent (definitely better than Arriba Arriba).

I prefer Mi Nidito in that neighborhood for standard Mexican and decent margaritas. They have a ton of fruity flavors and many people like the frozen ones, but I like the regular margarita on the rocks with salt. basic. satisfying. and the enchiladas are pretty good. Nothing to travel for, but it hits the spot.

The margaritas and food at Arriba are decent, but the host has major attitude. When I entered with a few friends, the entrance hall was packed, so as the host was crossing off a name from the waiting list, I asked if he would mind writing down my name. He said, 'that won't be necessary', and proceeded to seat us, but as I walked outside, I overheard him talking trash to my friend about my wearing glasses and somehow being stuck up, or about to start a fight. He was actually extremely loud about this, and seemed to be trying to be deliberately insulting, as if he had had a bad day and was trying to take it out on someone else. I can't believe that hosts can get away with this kind of behavior, considering that their only function is to seat people. At the very least, you'd think they'd criticize you to your face instead of gossiping behind your back. I'd avoid this place, because it really seems to think it's 'all that'. Christ, I felt like I was an unfortunate patron at the record store in High Fidelity!

I have never been a fan of Arriba Arriba -- I find the staff to be surly at best. We often go to El Azteca on 9th at 52nd St. Good margaritas and decent food. The place has a pretty fun/lively atmosphere too.

I guess it's kind of 'chi chi' but Blockheads bet. 49/50, 8/9 has great outdoor seating, great frozen margaritas (if you like them that way) that are dirt-cheap ($3 or $3.50!) and decent food. Nice place to sit and drink.

i second el centro and blockheads for drinks only. the best margarita though is the ultimate margarita on the rocks w/ salt at HK (39th and 9th). Go during happy hour and they are $6.
