Very BAD dinner at Town (long)
So due to scheduling problems my friends and I ate at Town rather than going to The Harrison. While I was waiting for my friends I got a dirty martini at the bar which cost $17! That should have been my first clue that my night was going to stink. The decor at Town is very pretentious and very dated looking. This would have been acceptable if the food had been good, but it was tasteless. A very snooty french guy explained the menu to us and wasn't very helpful when it came to recommendations. The atmosphere was unrelaxed and uptight. To start with I got grilled Foie gras which was just terrible. I've had this dish at other restaurants and it was delicious, but this was a grilled gelatinous mess. Then I had the Dover sole which I thought would be delicious. It was overly salted while simultaneously tasteless. Also the fish seemed a bit dense rather than light and buttery. For dessert we got beignets that were filled with chocolate. This too was really sub par. So many restaurants do such great desserts that this just didn't measure up. They were ok, but by no means great. I also found it disturbing that during our dinner no one came over to us to see if we needed anything or if we were enjoying our meal. For the prices at Town both food and service should be much better.
Wow, I had the same reaction. I had the prix-fixe lunch there a few months ago. It also came with a snooty waiter and salty fish.
my husband and I have dined at Town. mainly for dinner and a few lunches in the past two years (we live in the neighborhood), and while we find the service a bit "snooty" and certainly not perfect, the food is always excellent, well-executed, and balanced. while their cocktails are at the higher end of the spectrum, the food is actually quite a value certainly better than the Harrison (in our opinion). Thanks for the info, we are going to Harrison next week, we'll report back.
I was at Town about two weeks ago and had a delicious, memorable, unpretentious meal. Service was impeccible, my blood orange martini amazing, and my main course of duck breast was probably the best I've ever had. I can't say anything bad, other than I was quite unimpressed with the deserts. Beignets were not that great, though a lemon curd dish was pretty good. Sorry to hear your bad expereince. I will surely return,
